Amazon’s secret experimental recruiting bot was supposed to be the futuristic shortcut to finding top talent. Instead, according to the Reuters/Euronews report, the system ran into a nightmare problem: it was not rating candidates for technical roles in a gender-neutral way.
Here’s the jaw-dropper: the tool had been trained on years of past resumes, most of them from men, reflecting the gender imbalance in tech. So the machine started treating old patterns like destiny. It reportedly penalized resumes that included terms like “women’s” — for example, “women’s chess club captain” — and downgraded graduates of two all-women’s colleges.
Amazon tried to patch the obvious problems, but the bigger fear remained: what if the AI simply found new hidden shortcuts to discriminate? Eventually, the project was shut down, and recruiters were said to have looked at its recommendations without relying on them alone.
🤖 The lesson? AI does not magically delete bias. Feed it a biased past, and it may serve that bias back with a five-star rating system.
