South Korea’s Deepfake Crisis Is Getting Worse — And Now Even Watching Could Be a Crime
South Korea is cracking down after reports that schoolgirls’ selfies were turned into sexual deepfakes and shared in Telegram groups.
The new law does not only target people who make or share these images. It can also punish people who possess, save, buy, or view them, with possible prison time or heavy fines.
Victims’ groups say this is necessary because every click keeps the abuse alive. Critics warn the law could go too far, especially if someone sees something accidentally.
